How relevant is ERD in understanding UML. Since most of major databases are relational, is UML better in understanding relational databases.

Thanks.

Rajeev.

By far I prefer E-R modeling for understanding the resultant DB.

Where UML is a sort of combination of object-oriented modeling approach and object-oriented design, I too, prefer the more close to relationship standing ER method to understand and follow relational databases.

It seems the class diagram in UML is similar to ERD, with additional semantics. Since most UML defined systems implementations (eg. Java apps) run on relational databases, should plain ERD be used instead. I am wondering are we unnecessary complicating working with relational databases using UML.

We are indeed Wink

UML is trying to make the DB fit the (object) language, while the DB is the source of information for any program, using any language (object-oriented or not). A lot of confusion is going on in our business, driven by vendors who want to push new products on us. Many times, I feel we are going backwards in the DB idustry.

Read this:

http://www.databasedesign-resource.com/flat-relational-tables.html

and this:

http://www.databasedesign-resource.com/objects-vs-relational-tables.html

Carefully notice how the vendor that is publishing the referenced "whitepaper" is trying to turn every issue in his product's favor, while opposing logic and clear thinking on the matter. I say this often: Please think for yourselves Exclamation

The document I link to in those articles (with a rel="nofollow", of course Smile ) claims to be a "whitepaper" or "analyst report".

It's neither. Period.

Written by (quote) "a research, analysis and strategic advisory company serving the IT industry", one can only hope that innocent companies in need of professional DB help/assistance are managing to avoid them.
