In my opinion, much of what as been written about an "XML data model" can be seen way bay in time. I am fortunate enough to have been working with such models in the early years of database design, and can see the traces of old ideas being "invented" once more.
If you read this article (please do; it is also a history lesson), I think you will understand what I mean:

The problems with the hierarchical model was one of the prime reasons why Edward F. Codd came up with the relational data model (By now, you should know what a data model is, as opposed to a database model ).
